Bob's Red Mill Natural Foods

Now a days people are looking for a way to make everyday meals healthier. It is nice to know that there are some companies that have had the same mantra for over thirty years. Bob's Red Mill has been a leader in bringing good people "natural foods in the natural way". This mill outside of Portland Organ is a stone grinding miller of whole grains. Up there in the north west Bob and his family have been the leader in whole grain products, from flours and hot cereals to baking mixes and grains. From rolled oats and Muesli to flax seed and wheat germ. Bobs has everything, beans, soup and bread mixes, even baking soda. They have more then 400 products that are made from raw ingredients that are sourced from farmers throughout the United States and Canada. Not only do they have 50 different certified organic products, they also have a line of certified gluten free products. Then on top of that all of their products are certified Kosher by a Rabbi. The letters GMO have been out of the papers lately, but Genetically Modified Organism's are not real food. The Red Mills products come from identity preserved seeds. Bob's can not say the same for it neighbors and because of wind drift cross pollination their products don't carry a GMO-free label. So all this means that Bob uses real seed to make real food the way nature intended. Now in their search to "provide our customers with something that is fully nutritious and delightful to eat,” they have brought out two Hemp products. Bob's Hulled Hemp Seed and Hemp Protein Powder are made from “One of nature’s most perfect foods.” How is Hemp good for you? Well, our bodies use proteins called Amino acids. These Amino acids are important to muscle tissue and a healthy immune system. All in all hemp has twenty known Amino Acids, ten that our bodies cannot produce by themselves. Like most of Bob's products these can be added to smoothies and sprinkled over cereal, or used in baking. No need to go far to find Bob's meals and cereals. They are carried in many health food stores and groceries. One can also put in a order online. They internationally ship UPS or in the US through the postal service. One can even ship some whole grains to military addresses out of the US. If you want to start to eat better with less toxins in your everyday diet then try Bob's Red Mills natural foods.

Vintage Jewelry Good to Buy and Sell

What is old can be new again, even when you think of Jewelry. When you buy vintage jewels then you don''t directly support companies that mine into the earth or buy and sell "blood diamonds." Vintage is "green" and fashionable at the same time. When shopping your favorite thrift store make sure to dig through the costume jewelry its is usually in a glass case. Some great finds can come from flee markets or antique stores. The best place to go is small vintage shops, most have lots of sparkly things from yesteryear. It is as important to buy anything you can used as it is to recycle our used stuff. The more we can reuse the better off we all will be.

Ugly Sweaters Make Funky Leg Warmers

As it gets colder we are all looking for ways to stay warm. When we take a second look at our closets we might find winter clothes that have spent years on hocks and hangers. It is easy to take the used coats and boots into a donation spot. What do you do with all the ugly sweaters? Some of these sweaters where ugly gifts, some you never even tired on. You can make them in to cool gifts that keep your friends warm. With just the sweaters, some buttons, and needle and thread you can turn the sleeves into leg warmers. Just cut the arms off the sweater, pull the arm up over a leg. Then you fold and add buttons for fit and fashion. The main body of the old sweater can be used as stuffing for pillows or saved for some other project.

Book Then Movie: The Road

You think we have problems now just Wait till the end of civilization is upon us. With all these movies about the "end of days" it's hard to look forward to the future, but remember you never know what the future can bring. The Road by Cormac McCarthy is a short little narrative about the day to day hardships of a man and his son after the would has turned to "ash." Without any chapters the small journal like entries are followed by some dialogue between the two wonders. Lots of Danger out there on the road but you have to travel south as the winters are getting longer, darker, and colder. This book was almost to easy to finish. (read in three sittings) The movie looks good with a good director and a a fitting cast, but you don't want to feel like you missed out when someone says, "you should have read the Book first."

If you collect things, then you probably have an assortment of buttons. These could be called pins and when you have a ton of them that might be out of date or promotional reuse them. Just paint over them right? Well there is a trick to picking the right paint. Its is important to use a outdoor latex paint that works on wood, metal and plastic. Use a small brush to paint on these little pins the smaller the better. Make sure to dry every coat before starting the next. Or you can find sone stickers that fit and just stick them on. This is a way to recycle buttons and show off your stickers. Its a great day when you fined another way to recycle anything made out of plastic.

Real Coffee in a Real Cup

Everyone knows what happened in the 90's to most coffee shops. The explosion of Starbucks and other coffee chains popped up across the street from the small hometown places. Some of us remember when you could go in with a mob of friends and chat for hours over Cappuccino and snacks. When at night there might be a poetry reading, or open mike. The elimination of this is one of the problems that comes when people get there caffeine fix from chain stores. Most of the country that live outside major city's have little choice on where or how they enjoy a cup of Joe. Not to long ago one could walk in grab a pastry and sit down with a porcelain (or glass) refillable, washable and much better for the environment cup. Only in the morning when on the go did you use a paper or god forbid Styrofoam to-go cup. Yes, one answer to this is to buy a reusable cup to take in with you. This works when one in on the way to work, or school when one might have a bag to put said cup in for the rest the day. But what about when you are just stopping in for cup before a show, or meeting friends before a night on the town and don't have a big bag. Maybe your dressed up or planing to meet a date latter in the evening, carrying a bag just for you coffee cup sounds kind of crazy. The big chains do not give you a choice if you stay in, you get a to-go cup either way. It might be hard to do, but some of us seek out the small coffee shops. Unfortunately now it gets harder to find one that has real coffee cups. Even the small Internet cafe's don't give you a cup that they might have to wash. Dishes have become to hard for people these days, to much work and effort. With the sign of the times being lit up in "green" lights it seems strange that all the responsibility is with the customer. Bring your own cup if you want to be green, never mind the other 20 customers at little round tables that could enjoy coffee with out tossing out so much trash. What can you do? Carry your own cup when you can is one thing, asking everyplace if they have a real cups when your order in another. If they say no, go ahead have some coffee, at least your giving your money to a small business. But before you leave make sure you tell someone in charge that you would have enjoyed your visit more with a Real Cup for your coffee.

Thrift Stores Can Make The Holiday's Affordable

It has been hard times this year for almost everyone. This means that it is hard to scrap together cash for everyday expenses. Then we have the Holidays approaching and lists are going to be hard to fill. This is why if you start now it can be easy to find green ways to make this year the best. First it is important to make a extensive list that can fit in your pocket book. Then if your not acquainted with your towns local thrift stores go online and find out the skinny on them. When out thriftting bring your list and keep an eye out for junk that your friends and family will think is treasure. If you have little ones on the list stay away from the stuffed animals, and go over to the books. A new young couple you know could maybe use some housewares. For that one person that you would rather cross off and forget but can't, just find them a nice sweater. Grandmothers love scarfs or picture frames filled with your own photo, of course. Sometimes a nice print in a frame could fill your friends empty wall. All of these things can be found used. When you have a lot of wives or girlfriends that you don't know well a gift basket could do the trick. Just find some nice small baskets, line them with some fabric and find lots of little things to fill them with. One set could have soaps, bath salts, and lotion. Another Set could have a mug with tea, coco, and maybe some hand towels. Candles and incense would fit into either of these themed baskets. The good dollar store is the place to the find little extras you might need. Just take any basket and add anything that fits the gift recipient. Gift baskets for baby's are easy, and for the older collage bound just find some shot glass and get some shooters from the LQ. If you start looking for used gift options now you can finish your list and be ready to party through the Holidays.

Book Then Movie: Where the Wild Things Are

This wonderful children's picture book is from the early '60's and is loved around the world. Written by Maurice Sendak it has sold 19 million copies. Maurice came up with the "Things" when at his family's home in Brooklyn. Using his aunts and uncles for the likeness and names of the monsters. This book is about the imagination of a little boy and how it helps him understand his emotions. With little text Maurice uses mostly pictures to tell the story line. In the book Max, the young boy, is sent to his room for acting up. From there his mind takes over and he goes on an adventure to the land of the Wild Things. A book not short on critical acclaim being held high right after its original release. Even then they new that the story has a balance of complex thinking and simplicity. Manohla Dargis noted that "there are different ways to read the wild things, and probably as many ways to ruin this delicate story of a solitary child liberated by his imagination." If you have not read this book go into a bookstore and read it through once or twice. Please glance at this children's book before you see this movie.

Really Really Free Markets

It seem like the idea of getting something for free is coming back into most Americans minds. Think back to when you got free French fries with your burger, of a free wash with your hair cut. Yes as we all slim down our "footprints" and our budgets the concept of free has been brought back. There is lots of ways to find what you need for free online. Craigslist has been a good place to find free stuff. There is also a helpful little site called Free Cycle, just join and search for that perfect item your looking for. If your looking for free goods or services with a sense of community go seek out the Really Really Free Market (RRFM) near you. These Free Markets are not a place to sale or barter, it is about sharing resources. This is seen as an alternative to our consumer based culture. Most of them are held once a month in public parks, community commons or Church's. If you don't have a Really Really Free Market close at hand, why not start one yourself? "If you Build it they will come" and the RRFM movement can help you with that.

Wrap Up Gifts In A Green Way - Recycled Gift wrap

If you have gifts to give why not get creative with the wrapping? Why should we go out and buy lots of wrapping paper and bows? When we can make them from recycled stuff around the house. Most people know that you can reuse the funny papers. Housewarming party's can use up the Home and Garden part of the paper. Why not use the Stock Pages for a brokers party? Or use the cover of gardening magazines for a that party this spring. Its good save the tissue paper from stores like Victoria's Secret to use latter for wrapping. Same goes for Ribbons and bows - If you save them then they will then they will be there. Its fun to wrap something in a brown shopping bag, just turn it inside out, then draw on harts or polka dots. This is a great way for kids to add a special touches to their friends gifts. Fabric is a good gift wrap. You can even make bows out of fabric, like bow ties. Lace is always an easy way to dress up a package. When you buy flowers for your house save the paper wrapped around them. Most have little harts or flowers on them and can be used for mothers day, an anniversary or a wedding. Take a look around your house before you send out another stack of Cd's to your friends and at least tie a bow around them. Everyone likes to feel special by opening wrapped gifts.

Recycling Electronics Made Easier

Everyone that lives in the 20Th century is surrounded by computers and electronics. You, or a loved one probably have one or two electronic devices in your pocket right now. These innovations have sprung up around every Conner. They make our lives faster and are made with the thought of making our lives easier. But what do you do when one breaks or becomes obsolete. Unlike the electronics of yesterday, which people took in to be repaired, (like vacuums, radios, and toasters) the electronics of today usually just get replaced. Most of these new gadgets are made of bad plastics and hazardous materials, including lead, cadmium, and mercury. LTD Screens have a chemical that loves to seep into ground water. How do we get "out with the old and in with the new" without throwing harmful trash out onto the streets and landfills? Recycling electronics has just of late become easier for most of us here in the USA. You can use your computer to find recycling solutions near you. Even some of the people that are selling new electronics are helping out. Best Buy has different ways of recycling your old items when you go in to pick out your new ones. They even have a pick up service for large TVs and appliances. Bust Buy have a $10 dollar fee for somethings but give you a gift card for $10 dollars to off set the cost. Most small stuff like monitors, phones, Small TVs and CD/DVD players can just be dropped off. Every U.S. Store will have a kiosks set up right inside the door where they take even the small stuff like inkjet cartridges and batteries. Best Buy is not the only store getting into the green spirit, many stores have recycling programs just give them a call before you go in to shop. If they don't have anything in place maybe mention it to a manager or who ever picks up the phone that they should start helping their costumers recycle properly or they might see a drop in business. Verizon Wireless goes a step further letting you drop off your old phone to be reconfigured and then donated to a family in need. This is available at Verizon stores nationwide. So please don't throw your old appliances of electronics out on the curb, find a place to recycle them. This is the least we can do for the environment and ourselves.

Street Books - Nicholas Ray An American Journey by Bernard Eisenschitz

Found - Essex St. and Rivington St in the LES
Picked up because - James Dean on cover
Nicholas Ray was an under appreciated part of early Hollywood. An highly passionate director that most people don't know by name. Yes everyone knows "Rebel Without a Cause" was a classic, but now after reading this biography by Bernard Eisenschitz, one finds that this director had real life experience with the nitty-gritty of American life through the 30's and 40's. Born in the Midwest he moved to New York during the depression, there he became a part of the theater. Then when President Roosevelt's New Deal gave many artist work throughout the country, Nick went out into the backwoods of this country to help rural areas with local theater activities. These experiences in peoples homes and backyards in the 30's helped Nick set up the feeling of real American hardship in his films. During this time Nick got to work with Charles and Pete Seeger. This started his love of folk and blues (used in most of his films) and Nick's technical skills in sound. Before going back to theater and then moving on to film Nick moved back to New York. Working the sound for many jazz clubs he meet Billy Holiday and other greats. Also he would bring up some of the musicians that worked with him on the radio and lived with him in the country like Leadbelly. Living such a rich life before Nick went west to Hollywood might have been why he seemed so passionate to others in the film industry. In this book Bernard Eisenschitz takes you from movie to movie with an easy flow. Here is where the reader gets the whole story about RKO, and Howard Hughes. Lucky RKO lent Nick out for Bogart's "In a Lonely Place." The title says a lot about how Hollywood could feel for the writer/director. Even in the western, Johnny Guitar there are hints of how Nick felt about Hollywood with lines like: 'I'm a stranger here myself." The best is how Nick handled the actors and actresses. Mostly with little whispered suggestions, he was said to be able to pull the character out of the actor. Working in a very loose way, sometimes with only part of a script he would encourage improvisation, unheard of with most directors. This book does not glorify Nick, Eisenschitz puts in all the gambling, drinking, and the problems with Nick's wifes. Eventually Nick goes to Europe to make some films, then ends up back in New York as a teacher and lecture. Film direction, Nick told his students, is a "hunt for the truth" This book's "hunt for the truth" was more then just a story about Nick Ray, it was about how sometimes we as Americans don't really see who we are. How we need artists like Nicholas Ray to show us our own story before we believe in it.

Sea Shell Glass Jars - Decorate With Memories

In the summer the beach is one of the best spots to "beat the heat." Lots of people collect sea shells to remember the trip. Why not show off you're memories in the bathroom or kitchen? This is a great way to recycle glass jars. When at the store buy condiments in glass jars, this is better for you and the environment. Then rinse the jars for some time to get the label off, once there clean you fill them with shells, sea glass, buttons. Anything collected at a day at the beach. Then add water so the colors stand out more. Be sure to put a little label and date on each jar, or it can get confusing. In a window this is best displayed, this lets the sunlight shine through the glass.

Tine Travelers Wife-Book Then Movie

My mom gave me this little book because I like Science fiction. It was not only the fastest read but impressed me a avid Sci-Fi reader. Now there is a movie coming out and I wished more people had read the book. The story of a man who time travels with no way to predict it. Jumping back and forth through peoples lives, living his life in scattered fragments. Written by American author Audrey Niffenegger. One to read and give away like my mom did. A must read.....hopefully before you see the movie.
Lots of the books we enjoy could be reused as gifts. Just rap and send it out, to be reread by someone who will love it. If you read to much to send them all out as gifts, you can donate them to your local library. Small used book stores are cool, might buy your own reused book. If not here are some more ideas:

Street Books - Ghost of 42ND Street Anthony Bianco

Found - Brooklyn on Gram near MetropolitanPicked up because - black and white cover looked coolHistory is never boring on the forty deuce, from stars to strippers its seen it all. This little corner of New York became the center of the world, "The Great White Way." Then it almost fell into ruin before being lifted up back on high. Yes it's a ruff and tumble story. A great topic for a book, fitting that our first "Street Book" is about a street. This does read easy but also tells specifics. Theater from vaudeville to burlesque, business from real estate to retail, even some police actions. All the cheaters of the streets come out when reading about what went down on 42ND and Broadway. From stables to today what other part of America could make 300 pages seem like a quick read. An exciting twenty four hour year round street, part of what makes New York, New York. Times Square is a destination for the whole world and after reading "Ghost" you know why.

Dress Up Your Home With Reused Containers

Lots of household containers can be decorated and transformed from trash to gifts, art, or just little stash boxes. Reusing coffee cans, Pringles or oatmeal containers, or even little boxes with lids is fun and simple. This is a great craft for the kids, it's that easy. All you need is to scare up some magazines, catalogs, old books with pictures. Maybe you have some old posters, maps, anything you can cut up and collage together. Even some department stores bags have nice designs on them. Next grab some Mod Podge from any store that sells school, or craft supplies. This is cheap and goes a long way. Use some small paint brushes, old ones, for this project. You have to rinse them well when your done if you want to use the same ones over, and over. Then when you get all the pictures cut out put a small amount of the Mad Podge on the back and start layering. When the design is done let the glue dry. Then follow the directions to put on a thin layer of the Podge on for a glossy finish. Make sure to let this dry where nothing can get to it. You can paint the lids, cover them with fabric, or anything that looks cool. Use them on your desk or sewing table to organize stuff. You kids can keep any small toys in the ones they make. Match one to your bathroom to hide the little things from view. Dress up anything with this magic glue and you imagination.

Buy Recycled, Close the Loop

Recycling is only half the battle. It's important to remember that buying recycled increases the demand for recycled content products and closes the loop on the recycling process. As more and more Americans look for simple ways to become environmentally friendly, more and more companies are taking the initiative to make products out of recycled goods and fibers. Buying recycled helps conserve and protect natural resources, and makes a damned that companies will eventually supply. You can shop at places known to carry recycled products, or just buy them when you see them at your supermarket, either way puts presser on stores and companies to offer us more. Some are ahead of the game like Reynolds Wrap® Foil from 100% Recycled Aluminum, or Pilot Pens BeGreen line which even the packaging is recycled. When shopping take a little time and read labels. Sometimes there's a recycled choice right on the shelf and you aren't aware of it. Even some small corner stores now carry recycled toilet paper and the like. Remember that as a costumer you do have some power, unless you choose not to use it.

Reduce Your Use - Water

Everyone should try to save water but if one rents they cant just install a low flow toilet or a double sink. There are easy things we can do to reduce the water being used in our apartments. We have heard all about only washing full loads of clothes and dishes. If you do all your dishes by hand without a double sink keep a medium sized bowel in the sink to fill with soapy water, instead of running the water to wash and rinse. When washing fruits and veggies collect the water for your house plants. Make any toilet low flow by adding water bottles with some sand or pebbles fill the rest with water and put the cap on. This can save water in one step. The easy thing is not to let the water run. Did you know that 25 gallons can be saved by turning the faucet off while brushing you teeth. Only one or two minutes in the shower can save 150 gallons per month, and there is a tool you can use to make this easy too. A shower timer is the best thing to shave off those extra minutes. They are found online, sometimes you can find one for free. This is just the start on how you can "Reduce Your Use."

Plastic Bags Organized

By now most people know they should bring a bag with them for purchases. Plastic bags are out of style. Some people keep small bags with them, in there purse, pockets, briefcases. Some think ahead and bring Backpacks or other reusable bags with them when going out to shop. What about when you just grab something from the Corner store? I like to carry these small items in my hands. If I don't have a bag then everything is in my pockets and my hands are free. We do have thumbs for a reason. There is a something great about telling the cashier "I don't need a bag..I'll carry it." Sometimes those little shopping bags do come into the house. Most of us use them for trash bags, or if you have a dog "doggie bags." They end up shoved in a drawer or under the sink. With summer here the perfect solution comes with it. Everyone has a pair of pants that can be made into a new pair of shorts. Its easy to put a drawstring through the bottom hem of the pant leg. Then fold over the top and sew a top hem. Add a strip of fabric to hang them from, and boom, problem solved. Just stick the bags in the top and pull them through the bottom. Even decorate them as you wish. Dogs for the doggies, tools for the one in the garage, even match your kitchen. Then with this homemade plastic bag holder you can reuse your plastic bags in an organized way.

Instructions:

A) Cut off pants
B) Cut a small hole in the bottom hem of pants
C) Put a safety pin through the string
your using as a drawstring and pull
it through the hem
D) Fold over the top and sew over for top hem
E) Sew on scrap of fabric as handle

What.....Bad Plastic?

So I was watching PBS and Bill Moyer was telling us about Bisphenol-A.(BPA) I always hated plastic so now there is proof its bad for me and you. Bisphenol-A is a synthetic sex hormone that mimics estrogen, and is found in everyday products. It has affected the development of animals leading to cancer, and is found in 93% of human beings. This is a sensetive issue because it effects mothers and their babies even more, but in the US baby bottles are made of the stuff. The compaines behind the chemical say its safe. We hope so almost all containers are made entirley of it or just has a coating of it along the inside. Even canned food and some soda cans are coneceted to this specific plastic. Not the only bad chemical in the plastic that surounds us.
Who is out there to keep us safe from these chemical dangers? Faster then a speeding bullet, able to...to what? The environmental protection agency or the federal government, you would think, would be willing and able to do something. In other countries they have passed laws that protect people from things like rBTS and BPA.
Should we write to our local senator? Boycott Distributors? There are some ways to get plastic out of our lives. Know what kind of plastic you have around you. Find places to properly recycle plastic. What I do is buy everything in glass, from mustard and ketchup to salad dressing and pasta sauce. You can find glass containers with lids for leftovers, get a glass blender, or a glass coffee press. then throw out all plastic cups and dishes from your cabinets. Its easier then you think. Remember you are a product of your surroundings.
